The tamper is your key to a consistent, full-bodied espresso. With the right pressure and size, you ensure that the coffee grounds are optimally compacted – for perfect extraction.

Finding the right tamper size

The tamper size is crucial for evenly compacting the coffee grounds and therefore for perfect espresso extraction. For your espresso to be full-bodied and aromatic, the tamper should fit your portafilter perfectly.

If your espresso machine manufacturer doesn't specify a tamper size, you can easily determine it yourself:

To find the right tamper size, simply measure the inner diameter of your portafilter and subtract 1 mm from the measurement. A tamper that is too small will compress the coffee grounds unevenly, while one that is too large won't fit properly or could damage the portafilter.

Or, to be absolutely sure, use our printable and cut-out tamper templates. Place the desired template in your portafilter – this way you can quickly and accurately find the right diameter for your new tamper.
