Carlsbad jug

Weiße Karlsbader Kanne steht auf einem Holztisch in einem Café

Metal and plastic filter coffee machines are standard these days. However, those who want to prepare their coffee particularly gently and with pure aroma should opt for the Carlsbad coffee pot, also known as a "flush pot." Made entirely of flavor-neutral porcelain, this pot eliminates the need for paper filters and allows for an unadulterated taste experience.
The method has a long tradition: it originated in France and was first described there in 1795 – today it is experiencing a well-deserved renaissance.

Preparation in the Carlsbad pot

Kaffeepulver wird oben in eine weiße Karsbader Kanne gefüllt.

The Carlsbad coffee pot consists of several porcelain parts: an upper water reservoir with an integrated sieve, a middle part for the coffee grounds, and the lower serving pot into which the finished coffee drips.
The principle is simple and elegant – hot water slowly flows through the coffee grounds and the porcelain sieve downwards, where the finished coffee is collected.

For the perfect taste, you should use a filter coffee roast and set the grind rather coarsely, as the pot does not use a paper filter.

Here's how:

Heißes Wasser wird oben eine eine geöffnete weiße Karlsbader Kanne gegossen
  1. Add approximately 8g of ground coffee per cup to the top sieve.
  2. Lightly moisten the powder to create the so-called Blooming to enable – the coffee “blossoms”.
  3. After about 30 seconds, slowly and evenly pour in the remaining water.
  4. Wait until the coffee has completely brewed and enjoy immediately.

The result is a clear, aromatically complex filter coffee, free from bitter substances and without the typical papery taste.

The Bayreuth coffee machine

A particularly well-known variant of the Carlsbad coffee pot is the Bayreuth coffee maker, which has been manufactured in Bayreuth from fine porcelain for over 100 years.
It impresses with its classic design and its two-stage porcelain sieve, which enables particularly fine filtration.
The porcelain is fully glazed, tasteless and easy to care for – a combination of tradition, functionality and timeless elegance.

A Carlsbad coffee pot is not an espresso maker.

The Carlsbad coffee pot is often mistakenly confused with an espresso maker. However, the brewing process is fundamentally different:
An espresso is made when high pressure (at least 9 bar) and short extraction time – the Carlsbad pot, on the other hand, works without pressure.
The water flows slowly through the coffee grounds, extracting more aromas and resulting in a mild, full-bodied filter coffee.

Espresso beans are therefore unsuitable for this preparation – they would release too many bitter substances.
Light, balanced filter roasts are ideal, as they unfold their subtle nuances during gentle extraction.

Conclusion

The Carlsbad coffee pot and its variant, the Bayreuth coffee machine, are more than nostalgic relics – they stand for conscious coffee enjoyment, craftsmanship and quality.
Those who value pure taste and love the ritual of brewing will find here one of the most original and elegant forms of coffee preparation.
