The blend makes the espresso
As Blend A blend refers to a mixture of different coffee beans. Especially for espresso, beans from diverse origins are combined to unite their best qualities into a harmonious final product. It is crucial that each coffee variety is roasted separately. Since each bean has its own unique characteristics, only separate roasting can achieve optimal results.
While Arabica beans are often considered superior in taste, high-quality Robusta gives the coffee a fuller body and more crema – comparable to a good cuvée in wine. It is only the balanced ratio of different bean characteristics that gives an espresso its distinctive flavor. Those who try single-origin coffees, on the other hand, may be able to better recognize the individual characteristics of each bean, but they miss out on the complexity and aromatic diversity of a successful blend.
A classic blend of 80% Arabica to 20% Robusta, for example, results in a balanced espresso blend – such as the Salimbene Superbar, which will surely convince even Robusta skeptics.
But as always with coffee: trying is better than studying!
